This website has been created to inform those interested in the history of a once famous part of New York City, known as Little Germany or German Town, that its memory is still alive. As a native born Yorkvilleite and, subsequently the Yorkville Historian I have built commemorative exhibits depicting the vibrant life Yorkville once knew, and a book is now also in the writing.
There are photos, and a historical overview featured, as well as the telling of a failed attempt to commemorate 86th Street, once known as the heart of Yorkville.
When there are relevant events, such as the exhibit/lecture about old Yorkville it will be posted on this website.
Other Yorkville inhabitants, both historical and contemporary, include a native born Yorkville German/American former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a lineal descendent of a famous Yorkville brewer who was part of the building of Yorkville.
From time to time volunteers are needed to help in doing some research, or curatorial work on the Exhibit.
The German Language Learning Club (GLLC) was established in 1990 as a cooperateve of teachers and students, and celebrates its 31st year as an affordable venue for those who wish to keep the language and their heritatge alive. It also meets in Yorkville.
The German/American Steuben Parade marches every September. The GLLC marches also so look for our banner. Anyone wishing to march with us is more than welcome. We then join the big party in Central Park afterwards. Tickets available (kaj133@aol.com). There are lots more of activities before and after the Parade such as a banquet, German Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, and an Oompah Fest on Long Island, on the following day.
